From Visionary to Bankruptcy: The Collapse of Asia’s Promising Startup Empire in 2022

(Excerpt from Premium ‘Why Startups Fail’ Case Study’)

Are you trying to make your business everything to everyone? Be careful.

In 2015, a similar startup company attempted this. After expanding rapidly and diversifying excessively, it did not take long before they went bankrupt—after nearly doing so.

Honestbee began in 2015 in Singapore with grand aspirations of becoming Asia’s top on-demand concierge grocery delivery service.

Initially, things went well—they secured USD 49 million in funding and quickly expanded into eight markets. But by 2018, trouble started brewing.

They attempted too much at once, offering grocery, food, and laundry delivery, plus a high-tech grocery and dining concept called Habitat. This complexity made everything difficult to manage.

They also burned through money too quickly and experienced frequent changes in leadership. By 2019, Honestbee was in serious financial trouble: it faced delayed salaries, layoffs, and shutdowns in several countries.

Despite efforts to turn things around, poor management and an unclear business plan led to its collapse by 2020.

Key lessons from Honestbee’s downfall include:

  • Keeping a clear business direction
  • Managing operations efficiently
  • Careful spending

Understanding the reasons behind startup failures is essential for anyone with a vision for the business world.

Take Honestbee as a case in point. It shows that the journey of a startup doesn’t merely conclude with securing substantial funding; rather, that’s where the true challenge begins. Read full case analysis: https://startupstorm.asia/course/honestbee
